INEC To Hold Supplementary Guber Election In Imo

Published by Guardian on Sat, 30 Apr 2011

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has resolved to hold supplementary elections in four councils of Imo State to decide the winner of the governorship election in the state. The commission had declared Tuesdays governorship election in the state inconclusive even as the PDP and APGA, which are the front-runners in the election claimed victory in the polls.A statement yesterday by the Secretary of the commission, Abdullahi A. Kaugama said the supplementary election would hold on Friday, May 6, 2011The supplementary election will hold in Ngor-Okpalla, Mbaitoli, Oguta and Egbema councils as well as in Orji Ward of Owerri North Local Council. It urged all stakeholders to ensure the highest level of integrity and good conduct in the supplementary election to allow for smooth conclusion of the governorship polls.Meanwhile, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare its candidate in the April 26 gubernatorial election in Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, winner of the polls. The party claimed that its candidate convincingly won the Imo election with all the results collated by the Returning Officer, Prof. Enoch Akobundu and made available to APGA agents at the local councils.Speaking at a media briefing yesterday in Abuja, National Chairman, APGA, Victor Umeh stated that from the results declared and duly signed by Akobundu, Okorocha polled a total of 299,254 votes as against 281,365 garnered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Ikedi Ohakim, who is the incumbent governor.Meanwhile, youths loyal to Okorocha yesterday continued to lay siege to the INEC office along Port Harcourt Road, Owerri in their bid to get the commission to declare the APGA candidate winner of the states gubernatorial polls.Umeh maintained that results from the 24 local councils (out of 27 local councils) accepted by the returning officer showed that APGA won in 14 while the PDP triumphed in 10 councils. He added that with the available results, Okorocha made the required 25 per cent from all the councils, including where the PDP won.The APGA chairman claimed that Prof. Akobundu, whom he accused of working for the ruling PDP, refused to announce the result for Mbaitolu Ikeduru Council, which was presented before him by the Collation Officer, Franklin Martin.
