Rain wreaks havoc in Auchi

Two buildings collapsed and many other submerged during a four-hour rainfall in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area State.It was also learnt that the rain affected no fewer that 30 stores in the business district of the area and destroyed goods worth millions of naira.The report confirmed that the ever busy Oshiobugie Street in Aifesdohai Quarters of Auchi was rendered impassable as a result of the flood.The rains began at about 5:00 a.m. and lasted till about after 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.Meanwhile, resident of the area have blamed the contractor handling road dualisation in the area for the disaster.One of the victims, Alhaji Abdulahi Mohammed, said the contractor should have consulted with the people on how to channel the water.'This is one thing government and their agents should take into account when working for the people. They should plan with the people.'We had intimated the contractor handling the road project on how to channel the water from the road but he bluntly told us he was working according to specifications.'We even advised the contractor to open up the inlet so that water from the road can freely flow through but they did not listen to anybody,' he said.Emeka Ufor, a store owner, told newsmen that his means of livelihood had been destroyed, saying: 'l do not know what to say.'I still cannot understand what has happened. Where do I start from,' he said.One of the owners of the collapsed building, who identified himself as Yakubu, described the incident as unfortunate.Yakubu said that the incident had turned him to a squatter though he was once a proud owner of a house.'You can see for yourself that my house is gone. What do I do and where do I start from,' he asked.
