Published by Tribune on Thu, 28 Jun 2012

About 4,735 households have so far been given the Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) against mosquitoes in Badagry Local Government Area, Badagry-West and Olorunda Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of Lagos State.Dr Adeyanju Oyetoyan, Medical Officer (Health) in the Badagry Local Government, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry. He said that the 4, 735 households were covered in just five days, out of the 15 days devoted to the exercise in the area.``Our fumigation personnel, after five days of the IRS exercise, have succeeded in covering a total of 4,735 households in Badagry,' he said.NAN reported that the exercise for the prevention and control of malaria, which was sponsored by the state government, was taking place in all the 20 local government council areas and the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state.Oyetoyan said that of the 4,735 households so far covered, a total of 21,143 rooms have been treated against mosquitoes. The exercise, which is scheduled to hold between June 9 and June 27, is taking place in all the 20 Wards in Badagry. There are 10 Wards in the Badagry-Central LGA, while both the Badagry-West and Olorunda LCDAs have five wards each.NAN learnt that the fumigation is expected to reduce mosquitoes in households and also reduce their breeding places in the area. One of the beneficiaries of the exercise, Mr Joseph Kuponu of 12, Hundeyin Compound, in Ward D, told NAN that the organisers had done well by taking steps to stem the prevalence of malaria in the area.'With the exercise, the Lagos State government has secured our houses against mosquitoes and malaria attacks,' he said. However, Mrs Janet Hunsu of the Badagry Government Residential Area (GRA), in Ward B, said her household had yet to benefit from the gesture. She said that they were still expecting the fumigation team in her area. The Lagos State government had earlier distributed treated mosquito nets to residents of Badagry in November and December 2011.
