Govs want intervention fund for troubled states

Governors of the 36 states under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) yesterday called on the Federal Government to establish a special intervention fund to cater for states affected by the current security challenges.The governors said this in a communiqu signed by the NGF Chairman and Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi at the end of their meeting in Abuja which ended in the early hours of yesterday.The governors noted that state governments are currently overstretched in funding security and identified the increasing need for state police as a strategy for combating the rising insecurity in the country.The forum condemned the spate of insecurity which it noted has been drifting the nation towards anarchy.The meeting, held at Rivers State Governors' Lodge, called for a multi-dimensional approach to security issues including enhanced coordination and collaboration among security forces, effective use of technology and intelligence, value re-orientation, employment generation and sincerity of purpose.The meeting was attended by governors of Rivers, Niger, Borno, Enugu, Sokoto, Delta, Taraba, Ekiti, Oyo, Kwara, Plateau, Zamfara, Kogi, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Abia, Enugu and Anambra states.Deputy governors of Ondo, Jigawa, Kano, Adamawa, and Lagos also attended the meeting.
