Ogun embarks on ambulance service restructuring

IN order to reduce and prevent the rate of accidents on the roads, the Ogun State government has embarked on major restructuring of the State Ambulance Service (OGSAS) and encouraged the formation of the State Road Safety Coalition Committee.Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, who disclosed this at the stakeholders' forum for the restructuring of OGSAS held in Abeokuta recently stated that the objective of the restructuring and the formation of the committee was to curb road accidents, improve emergency level and enhance road safety.In achieving the objectives, Soyinka stated that the state has bought four new ambulances, and adequate training of personnel has been carried out towards ensuring effective use of the new ambulances while it is joining in the global decade of action on road safety.According to the Commissioner the Committee, which include Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the Police, Bureau of Transportation (BOT), Red Cross and the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) 'is not a standing committee or legal entity but an agreement to cooperate between stakeholders which aims to align our activities through better communication.'He urged all stakeholders to work together to save a live and improve collaboration to enable an enhanced operation and perform better in order to reduce deaths and morbidity resulting from emergencies.Earlier in his address, the Special Adviser to the Governor, Dr. Rotimi Ogungbe stated that as part of the five cardinal programmes of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration, the State Ministry of Health has swung into action towards redeeming its campaign pledge.In their remarks, the Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Commander Ayobami Omiyale and the Core Commander of TRACE, Commander Ayodele Sangofadeji noted that it was very important for stakeholders to prevent injury from leading to death, while promising that all hands will be on deck to reduce accidents on Ogun state roads and respond to emergencies as well as accident occurrences promptly.
