Why integrity among students is important, by Esa

Published by Guardian on Thu, 28 Jun 2012

INCULCATING the ethics of integrity and accountability in Nigerian youths is one sure way of grooming leaders devoid of corruption and nepotism, Principal of Dansol High School, Lagos, Mr. Oladapo Esa, has said.According to him, students with integrity would be propelled to uphold good virtues, embrace honesty in its totality, and demonstrate good leadership trait in all endeavour.Esa who spoke to The Guardian during the school's Press Day celebration held recently, argued that 'because we lack leaders with integrity, the situation in the country has continued, but if we teach ethics of integrity and accountability to the students at this age; and parents do their part at home, no doubt our next generation will be true leaders of integrity in deeds and in words'.Presenting a paper titled, 'Realising Your Vision with Integrity in an Economic Recession Era', the Managing Partner of Chapel Hill -an advisory firm, Mr. Bolaji Balogun, maintained that everybody has some degree of integrity in them especially when they had nothing, 'but the moment they found themselves in position, wealth, they behave differently'.He noted that environment and peers has a way of misleading people, urging the students not to give in to negative influences. Balogun, who narrated the failures and challenges on his pathway, and the success stories of his life and career afterward, charged the students not to compromise honesty in their entire endeavour.'You don't have to cut corners to become successful, pursue your career with integrity, you are a generation of opportunity and you must use it correctly. As a child born in Nigeria, you have great opportunities because your country is great, in spite of our weaknesses and challenges, no country can ignore Nigeria, so you have to make best options and speak about your integrity everywhere you go'.
