Published by Guardian on Sat, 30 Jun 2012

ABIOLA Segun-Williams is not a new comer to the stage. Her foray into the theatre profession started in her primary school days, and by 1986, she had taken up acting as a profession. The Obafemi Awolowo University Dramatic Arts' graduate had a stint with the Punch Newspapers where she handled a column called, What's Up and also the defunct Concord Newspapers before going to the United Kingdom to hone her skills in speech making. The soft-spoken lady has performed stage plays such as Home, Her Husband Had Run Mad, Lion And The Jewel and others. She has also featured in British and American stage plays and Nigerian home movies. Abiola tells GERALDINE AKUTU about her fashion and acting. WHAT brought you into acting'I've always had the flair for acting right from my primary and secondary school days. Actually, God instructed me to go into it when I wanted to get into the university, so, I applied for Dramatic Arts and the rest is now history. How did you join the Tinsel team'I heard about it in 2007; I went for the audition and got a role to be part of the soap.Major influence in actingTaiwo Ajai-Lycett made an indelible mark on me.What makes your acting different from others'I don't know about others and I don't compare myself to them. I just internalise my characters and respond effectively to whosoever I'm acting with. What was your experience the first day you faced the camera'I was born to face the camera and I love to act. I must say the camera loves me.Your take on the Nigerian film industryI appreciate the work that has been done, but I think we can get it better. I feel a lot of us should still go and learn more on the job; we need to improve ourselves.Advice for upcoming onesIf you have the flair for acting, don't lose focus; strive to be the best you can. What's your dressence like'I, as much as possible, dress to be comfortable and I don't like thick materials. I prefer cotton or any light fabric. I wear a lot of short dresses, but not micro mini. How often do you change your wardrobe'I'm a disciplined person when it comes to buying, so, I buy only the things I need.Favourite colour(s) Purple catches my attention because of its richness. What wouldn't you be caught wearing'Anything revealing is distasteful to me. Uniqueness of styleMy style is just being me in what I wear.Beauty routineEvery morning I wash, cleanse and moisturise my face. At night, I do the same thing or else I'll break out.LikesPeace, honesty, simplicity and nice people.DislikesStrife, bickering, talkative, liars and troublesome people.Favourite foodRice.InspirationGod. Choice relaxation spotDubai because their hotels are cool and nice. Philosophy of lifeLive a life that will impart on people. What would you change in Nigeria, if given the opportunity' Our thinking should be retrained because we are extremely lawless and lack basic courtesies.
