Good corporate governance essential for economic growth

The doyen of the accounting profession, Mr. Akintola Williams, has urged the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) to entrench good corporate governance in its operations.He said this became germane in the face of increasing sophistication of the global market wherein trust is the only commodity that drives going concerns.Akintola, who made this declaration at the official launch of NSEs Ticker Tape in Lagos, on Friday, while rating the NSE as the third biggest Exchange in the world, stressed the need to keep the Exchange free from scandalous statements and information capable of eroding investors confidence in the market.He said, I am delighted to say that we are the number two or number three biggest stock exchange in the continent of Africa and I will want us to remain so with no scandal on our side.Ikazoboh was my partner for years and I must say you have chosen the right man to come along and assist you in the time when you have problems to resolve, he said.Responding, the President, Association of Stockbroking Houses of Nigeria, Mr Rachidi Yussuf, expressed the need for  mutual co-operation between the management and dealing members in order to make the Exchange a world class one and avoid a repeat of what happened in the past.I believe todays ceremony is so joyous for us because we are reclaiming what belong to us. Now that we have the chance to put our house in order, never again shall we allow foreign interference into our market.We believe there is need for cooperation among we owners, both ordinary members and the dealing members to ensure non repetition of what happened in the past, he said
