Union lists conditions for privatising power sector

The National Union of Electricity Employees has urged the Federal Government to put transmission lines and generating stations in place before privatising the nations power sector.Mr Wisdom Nwachukwu, the chairman of the union in the Garki Business Unit of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), gave the conditions in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Sunday, in Abuja.Nwachukwu said that government should reactivatethe distribution lines and transformers and pay workers their benefits before implementing the privatisation programme.He said that giving five years terminal benefits to workers who had worked for between 25 and 30 years was against labour law and that it would not make the privatisation programme to work.Nwachukwu said:``Five years terminal benefit, according to labour law, is for a dead man. The law said that acivil servant who had put in 10 years is entitled to resignation and benefit, not to talk of somebody who has served the nation for 25 to 30 years.
