Motorists decry multiple road blocks

Published by Tribune on Mon, 02 May 2011

Residents of  bordercommunities between Sango-Ota in Ogun State and  Ajegunle in Lagos State, have appealed to the police authorities in both states to  disband the multiple road blocks on the LagosAbeokuta expressway. The residents claimed that they waste endless hours in traffic, as a result of road blocks created by men of the Nigerian Army , men of Lagos   and Ogun states police commands, as well as officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).The angry residents also claimed to have suffered greatly from the  indiscriminate road blocks encountered between  Adura and Sango Toll Gate.A resident, who simply identified himself  as  Olalekan,  stated that men of the RRS and the Lagos and Ogun states police commands, were initially responsible for the hold up and that now, soldiers have joined themThe  residents also accused the security men of  not doing anything with the road block, other than extorting money from motorists  thereby creating serious traffic gridlock. In his words, it all started with the policemen at Alakuko police station, but they stopped after the press  waged a war  on them, but lately they  returned to the road.Another resident, who pleaded anonymity, stated that  the  artificial traffic jam  created by the security agents increased the number of hours that motorists were supposed to spend by, at least, two hours.Between Adura and Sango Toll Gate, which ordinarilly should not be more than 10 minutes  drive, it takes drivers more than  an hour, following the multiple road blocks on the road, he said. What is more annoying  is the fact that these security men are not even cheking vehicles . While some of them , especially the police collected money themselves, soldiers useagbero to extort money from motorist .The community news howecer observed that between  Ajegunle and Toll  Gate in Sango , which is  less than 300 metres, there are usually at least three road blocks, that allow motorists to use just a single lane , thus creating  serious traffic for road users
