Agbowo slum comes alive with solar power

Published by Tribune on Mon, 02 May 2011

There is an ungoingjubilation in somestreets in Agbowo over some poles of solar-powered street lights mounted by a non-resident of the area at the outset of the last elections. The streets enjoying the largese are Adeseun Street, Alabede Street, Ilupeju Street and Adewumi Street down to Transformer Bus Stop at U.IAgbowo express road, among others.Curious Community News went on a fact-finding mission to some of these lucky streets which have benefitted from the kind gesture of an unknown face in the vicinity and discovered that social and commercial activities had taken a different turn as darkness may have retreated permanently from the streets for good.Residents  of the area, who spoke with Community News, expressed their gratitude to the anonymous donor whom they said was behind the development. We just saw some people come around and started digging and erecting the poles. When we asked them, they said someone sent them to do the job, a resident, who identified himself as Tokunbo, stated.Mr. Abayomi Owolabi, a politician and resident in one of the beneficiary streets, also said it was unbelievable and worthy of praise. Its good; it lights up the whole area from 7.00p.m to 7.00a.m. Its a good development as it makes the area unconducive for night crawlers. You can see how happy people are. They are feeling proud and it gives us a sense of being in a city, Owolabi stated, adding that people should begin to look into alternative sources of energy to bring life to their environment.Community News, however, later fished out the man said to be behind the good work. Alhaji Akinpelu Adeseun, a retiree whose street is named after him, disclosed that the solar street lights were installed by his younger brother, Honourable Ayo Adeseun, who is, at present, a member of the House of Representatives under the Peoples Democratic Party ticket.Alhaji Adeseun said that Honourable Adeseun, who has won another seat to the Senate in the last 2011 National Assembly elections under the Action Congress (ACN) ticket, lit up the area despite the fact that Agbowo is not part of his constituency neither does he reside there nor in need of votes from the residents since the area is not under his constituency. My younger brothers contituency comprises 11 local government that excludes Agbowo, but because I told him that I would want him to replicate what I  heard he was doing for his area in my domain, he did not hesitate and I told him the street lights should go round all the streets around my street and he did it with nothing as returns for his gesture, elated Alhaji Adeseun stated, while thanking the politician for banishing darkness from the area.He said it would have been his greatest mistake if he had restricted the street light to his house or street alone like some others would have done. It would have been cheer oppression and an invitation to anarchy if I told my brother to restrict it to my house only. What would have been my gain He stated, adding that he did the same thing when the Alao-Akala government wanted to honour him with the tarring of his street.Roadside hawkers rank among those enjoying the street lights. Two elderly women, who were neither ready to give their names nor disclose the name of the provider of the street lights, were overjoyed while responding to questions. One of them, who spoke in Yoruba, said the light is good; we dont know who did it. Its Gods grace and we love it.An old woman, whose stall of mango and moi moi, lies beside Alhaji Adeseuns house, went took some dance steps when she started singing to God for using Honourable Adeseun to illuminate their streets. Why wont this man be blessed Why would darkness ever come near him and his children having given us light Do you see me putting on my lamp to sell my wares when everywhere is lit with  solar Only God will bless our Alhaji and the Honourable, the anonymous woman said while she continued her dance.Another trader along one of the streets said she was overjoyed by the development but like Oliver Twist would want it replicated in all streets in Agbowo. We will want it in all our streets. We love it; may God bless the person who did it, she prayed. At about 7.30 of April 15 when Community News visited the streets, the social life in the area was esctatic as both young and old were seen strolling and young boys and girls necking around like lovebirds while roadside traders had no need of using local lamps to display their wares for customers to patronise.
