Communities threaten to sue PHCN over high voltage

Published by Tribune on Tue, 03 Jul 2012

People living at Imalefalafia, Anfani and College Crescent areas, all in Ibadan South West Local Government Area of Oyo State, have warned the authorities of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in charge of the areas to send out its engineers to check all the transformers supplying electricity to the area and correct any anormally or malfunctioning noticed on any transformer, otherwise, they would take legal actions against the PHCN in the state if they supply high voltage or there is power outage in the area again. The inhabitants of these areas said the warning became imperative because there was a supply of high voltage to College Crescent and parts of Anfani communities two weeks ago which destroyed many electrical appliances in various homes.A resident of College - Crescent, Mrs Abimbola Adetayo, said there was a supply of high voltage from PHCN on that fateful day and she was not at home. But on getting home at night, her television, stabiliser, fan and other home appliances had got burnt.'I felt so bad but decided not to take action. What type of problem is this' We do pay our monthly electricity bills despite the fact that we are not enjoying regular supply of electricity.'Yet, PHCN still destroyes invarious homes through the supply of high voltage. If such a thing repeats itself, I will take them to court,' she vowed.Other people affected by the power surge in College - Crescent and Anfani areas also vowed to take the PHCN to court if they supplied high voltage to the community again. The people also warned PHCN to repair its malfunctioning equipment responsible for the disitribution of electricity to consumers, stressing that they were still struggling with the increase in the tarrif of electricity recently introduced by the Federal Government, yet, the PHCN was still destroying their properties through the supply of high voltage electricity.
