THE TEARS OF STRONG MEN

SHOULD a soldier, any soldier trained toignore pain, under any circumstance, cry,weep or wail Some psychologists may have tried to draw a borderline amongst the three levels of expression of pain, sadness or disappointment. There are people who even show joy by shedding tears hence the tears of joy.BUT Muhammadu Buhari is not your run-of-the-mill soldier. He is a General of the Nigerian Army and a former head of state known for his iron resolve, and if you like, rigidity. He once jailed two journalists under an obnoxious Decree No. 4, not to mention the public execution of some drug courier,s in spite of strong local and international appeals to the contrary.HOW then could somebody like that cry, weep or wail Has he mellowed on account of age Was he overwhelmed by a sense of patriotism that he had to mourn the repudiation of his offer to serve Nigeria on several occasions on a democratic ticket Certainly, General Buharis tears during a recent valedictory press conference as a presidential candidate could hardly be described as tears of joy.MOPPING the tracks of tears from his face, General Buhari had announced that this election would be his last bid to serve this country as a president, at least through the ballot box and hopefully, he would not seek any redress from the courts whichever way the pendulum may swing. Sadly, he had, in the main, been lampooned by commentators in the media as they refuse to see the import of the tears of strong men. Another General of the Nigerian Army, Ibrahim Babangida, who ousted Buhari had also once wept when he lost his wife to cancer.BUT for Buhari to cry over Nigeria ought to have been appreciated as ominous. Or could he have had a premonition about his electoral loss and the evaporisation of his lofty dreams
