NEMA reunites 20,000 Kaduna violence victims with families

Published by Guardian on Mon, 02 May 2011

OF the estimated 75,000 people displaced by the violence, which rocked Kaduna State after the presidential elections, no fewer than 20,000 of them have been re-united with their families, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).Responding to enquiries in Abuja, the agency also said it has donated relief materials and childrens items to mothers who delivered babies at theInternally Displaced Peoples Camps (IDPCs) in Kaduna.Three women, who ran for safety to refugee camps in Kaduna gave birth to two boys and one girl, who NEMA described as special Nigerians.NEMAs Spokesman, Yushau Shuaib, quoted the agencys Director General, Mohammed Sani-Sidi, as saying while making donations to one of the mothers at the temporary camp in Mando area of Kaduna, that the Federal Government would continue to provide the needs of displaced people. He said the IDPs are mostly scattered in some northern states, as well as in Onitsha, Anambra State.Meanwhile, the agency has implored traditional rulers to play a pivotal role in tutoring youths on morals and discipline to forestall violence and destruction of lives and property so that peace and unity could be achieved among the various ethno-religious groups and communities in the North.North-East Regional Coordinator of NEMA, Aliyu Sambo, gave this advice while addressing the Emir of Fika, Alhaji Muhammadu Abali Ibn Muhammadu Idris, on the violence and destruction of lives and property in Bauchi, Gombe and Yobe states after the presidential elections. He said the involvement of traditional and community leaders in moral upbringing of children and wards will reduce the population of IDPCs at the agencys resettlement camps in the three states.
