EPL Table: 2016 Week 26 Top Scorers After Sunday's Premier League Scores

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 14 Feb 2016

Jamie Vardy stretched his lead at the top of the Premier League scoring charts but couldn't help Leicester City pad their points at the summit of the table. The Foxes were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, despite Vardy striking from the spot in the first half.In the late game, it was Harry Kane who was unerring from the spot to help Tottenham Hotspur beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium and go second. Here are the full results from Sunday's games:Here's what those results mean for the table:Here are the division's top scorers:Jamie Vardy, 19 GoalsVardy made no mistake with his spot-kick, despite plenty of controversy about how it was awarded. The jet-heeled England striker took a tumble over the outstretched leg of Arsenal left-back Nacho Monreal.Gunners fan and media personality Piers Morgan tweeted an image of the incident and endorsed the decision:At live speed, it was certainly easy to understand why referee Martin Atkinson awarded the penalty. But replays appeared to show an exaggerated movement by Vardy as Monreal began to pull his leg back.Regardless, Morgan's view of the kick was supported by two former Arsenal players. First, ex-goalkeeper David Seaman:Then, one-time right-back Lee Dixon:But Vardy became a very isolated figure after the break, once defender Danny Simpson had been sent off for a pair of bookings. Manager Claudio Ranieri's decision to remove winger Riyad Mahrez in the wake of the dismissal robbed Vardy of his lightning-fast partner in counter-attacking brilliance. It left the England man with next to no service as Leicester's lead eventually disappeared.Harry Kane, 16 GoalsKane rolled his penalty past City stopper Joe Hart after Raheem Sterling had been cited for a disputed handball. Regardless of the veracity of the decision, Kane once again proved he is deadly in front of goal. His ultimate reward came when Christian Eriksen rolled in a second-half winner.Tottenham's premier forward just can't stop scoring lately, a fact noted by Squawka:As much as Spurs' excellent season owes a lot to a miserly back five and the emergence of dynamic midfielder Dele Alli, Kane is still the main man.Always a threat thanks to constantly perceptive movement, the England international always works the keeper. He can find the target with either foot and is very useful in the air.In a team full of skilled worker bees, all geared to create chances for No. 10, Kane is going from strength to strength on manager Mauricio Pochettino's watch.Vardy still owns the pole position in the scorers rankings. But he'll rue how his team lost key ground in this season's title race.Getting a few more goals from elsewhere will be firmly on the mind of Ranieri. As for Pochettino and Kane, both will likely be thinking how a Spurs title win now looks like a very realistic possibility.
