800,000 UTME candidates wont get admissions - Okebukola

THE immediate past Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola, has disclosed that over 800,000 candidates of the current Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME) applicants will not secure admission as a result of enrolment capacities into the nations universities.This is even as he stated that the much-touted recommendation of 26 per cent budgetary allocation to education by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) was a myth.Professor Okebukola spoke during an annual May Day lecture organised by the House of Lords, Nigeria, a 45-year-old family club, whose recommendations from past lectures have become reference materials in the ivory towers.The guest lecturer, who is also the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Osun State University Governing Council, said working on the premise that about 60 per cent of the applicants would be suitably qualified, a large army of the unsuccessful youths would roam the streets at the end of the 2010/2011 admission, despite having 117 universities.He opined that federaland state governments as well as private university proprietors would need to invest N837 billion in 10 years in the educationsector to achieve increased enrolment in the nations tertiary institutions.
