Published by Tribune on Tue, 03 May 2011

The Director-General of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Femi Ajayi, has attributed gruesome political killings and destruction of property in the country to drug abuse. The NDLEA boss stressed that drug control was very vital and remained a panacea for the orgy of pogrom and wanton destruction turning people into refugees in their own communities. This was the crux of his lecture entitled, Narcotic Drugs as Chemical Weapons of Mass Destruction, delivered, at the weekend, under the auspice of the Science Faculty, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara State. The event was part of activities marking the seventh Mosobalaje Oyawoye Faculty of Science Endowed Lecture series. The annual lecture examines a wide range of issues germane to peace and development. In this years edition, members ofthe planning committee were unanimous in their decision to address the problem of illicit drug use, particularly among youths. This, according to them, had become imperative because the youth who were the leaders of tomorrow also constitute a vulnerable target group that could be easily manipulated by selfish and heartless drug barons.According to the NDLEA director-general, pogroms, ethnic cleansing, genocides and mass murders decreed by tyrants and carried out by mercenaries have been linked to hard drugs. The actors have been shown to act under the heavy influence of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substanced. He further enumerated the consequences of drug abuse to include political instability, national insecurity, prostitution and crime, marital crisis and drug related accidents among others.Drugs have disruptive and destructive effects on political stability and national security. All hard drugs are notorious for their effects on the central nervous system. They distort reasoning and judgement, remove inhibition and cause psychosis. Curbing the menace of drugs now is an investment for the preservation of both the present and future generation from destruction, Ajayi stated.
