Chelsea Transfer News: Marco Reus, Edinson Cavani, Diego Simeone, Latest Rumours

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 19 Feb 2016

Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus and Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani are reportedly both key targets for Diego Simeone should he be appointed manager of Chelsea in the summer. The Argentine has been a front-runner to succeed Guus Hiddink as the permanent boss at Stamford Bridge since Jose Mourinho was sacked at the end of last year, withSpanish outletOK Diariorecently claiming he had agreed to take the job, viaMetro'sSean Kearns.Another Spanish source,Don Balon(h/t James Waltersof theDaily Star), has now indicated that Simeone is preparing for life in west London by "ordering"that Reus and Cavani both be signed. The report added that Simeone has tried to sign both players in his time with Atleti, a clear indication that he is eager to work with them.Certainly both have the calibre to succeed with Chelsea in the Premier League and help the Blues return to former glories.Eden Hazard is widely expected to depart the club this summer, with Bleacher Report's Dean Jones confident he will end up at PSG:Reus, 26, would be the ideal replacement for the the Belgian, as he can operate on the left flankas well as on the right or in the middleand issimilarlyeffective both as a creator and goalscorer as Hazard was in his 2014-15 pomp.Indeed, given how poor Hazard, 25, has been this season, the German playmaker would arguably be an upgrade.Compared to Hazard's dismal 2015-16 Premier League return of no goals and just two assists in 23 matches, Reus has netted nine times and provided three assists in 16 Bundesliga appearances, per WhoScored.com.The only concern about Reus is he is a little prone to injury. His fitness concerns have dogged him again this season, although his return has still been impressive, proving he does not need much time to return to form, per Bundesliga expert Alex Chaffer:Despite his poor play this season, Chelsea could still demand a significant transfer fee for Hazard, and a club like PSG would likely be willing to pay up.If the Blues could then use the money to fund the purchase of Reus they would have pulled off an excellent piece of business.Meanwhile, Cavani would be a high-quality addition as back-up and competition for Diego Costa, currently the Blues' only front-line strikerLoic Remy continues to be starved of opportunities and is clearly not seen as a viable alternative to the Spaniard. The Uruguayan has been impressive in his time at PSG despite consistently playing in the shadow ofZlatan Ibrahimovic, often being farmed out on the flank, rather than his favoured central position. His current tally in Ligue 1 for the season is 11 goals in 22 appearances, and he could likely be even more lethal playing as a genuine striker, per WhoScored. At the end of last year,Samuel Luckhurstof theManchester Evening Newsreported that PSG would demand32 million for the former Napoli man, quite a steep price given he is nearly 30.However, he would be a very good addition to the Chelsea squad, and the Blues could easily afford to meet the reported fee.
