Residents of Ewasede, suburb of Benin City, cry for help

Published by Tribune on Tue, 03 May 2011

Distressed residents of Second Ewasede Crescent area in Benin City, the Edo State capital, have appealed to  Edo State government to take steps to address what they called deliberate neglect of the area by the government. The Crescent, located around First East Circular Road at the heart of Oredo Local Government Area, is between Osaremwanta Street where the state deputy dovernor, Dr. Pius Odubus fathers house is and also his father-in-laws house in Ewasede Street.Osaremwanta and Ewasede streets were recently tarred by the state government, a project purportedly influenced by the deputy governor in his bid to give a facelift to the area where he was brought. But Ewasede Crescent was left unattended to and completely cut-off from development as residents of Second Ewasede Crescent cannot drive  conveniently into their homes.Residents of the area said materials were brought to the area for the asphalting of the roads but expressed surprise that the crescent was left out of the scheme of things. You see, my brother, we were very happy that Dr. Pius Odubu became the Deputy Governor and that the much talked about asphalting of the roads within his immediate environment would be given adequate attention. When they started work in Osaremwanta and Ewasede streets, our joy knew no bound, thinking that the same gesture would be extended to this crescent since it is in between both streets. But right now, you can see what has happened. Our street has been left out of the development and its now being threatened by erosion, a resident who simply gave his name as Osakpamwan said.He further said that a transformer given to streets within the community was yet to be energised and that over loading of the existing one had been resulting in electrical faults in recent times.Another resident who pleaded anonymity appealed to government to rescue residents in the area from the impending danger due to environmental degradation that might affect the area in the near future.According to him, The deputy governor is a man of everybody and not for a selected few on basis of his street or that of his wife, just as he wondered what sins they had committed to warrant what he described as the ill-treatment.He appealed to the administration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole to come to the aid of residents in the area.
