Volvo wants to sell you a completely keyless car

Published by Business Insider on Fri, 19 Feb 2016

Volvo will be testinga new app system for theirnewcars that will allow driversto lock and unlock their vehiclesfrom their phones, and only their phones. This is all part of an attempt to continue to "make their customers' lives easier and save them time."Though thereare multiple cars on the market already that can be locked and unlocked using a smartphone, Volvo would be the firstwhere the smartphone completely replaces the key.Using Bluetooth technology, the car would be able to recognize when the phone is in close-range and open the car. Drivers would also be able to lock, unlock, or start their cars directly from the app.One of Volvo's main hopes for this program is that it will make it easier to track and share cars. The digital key will be transferable from phone to phone, so if you needed to lend your car to a friend, you could do so without having to physically hand over a key. Yeah, because handing over a key is justso laborious.I'm not sure how many owners would go for this. Sure, it's a neat piece of technology to show off, but how much easier is it than a normal keyless entry system'There's a sense of security and trust that comeswith having a set of car keys, even with shared cars. This seems like it would take all that away.Volvo's app-centric keyless cars will first be tested withtheir Sunfleet car sharing program in Sweden in Spring 2016.Join the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: A $35,000 Tesla is coming
