First rainfall in Gombe wreaks havoc

Rainfall, accompanied by wind storm last Friday night, destroyed houses and business premises in some parts of Gombe metropolis, the News Agency of  Nigeria (NAN) reported.The rain,  which was the first in the state this year,  fell after weeks of suffocating humid atmosphere that had forced residents to sleep  outside of  their houses.Areas worst affected by the rain which  lasted two hours  were Liji, Bomala and Barunda in Gombe metropolis  where some  mud houses were destroyed.There was also flooding in some areas as a result of blockage of drains  by residents who had  dumped refuse and other wastes in culverts.Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) facilities were also affected, forcing the company to switch off power in some areas in Gombe.Mr Abubakar Sadiq, Operations and Maintenance Engineer of the company in Gombe, told NAN that a lot of the companys feeders and poles had been damaged.We are trying to see if we can restore power supply to some of  the areas,  but for others, we need to do some more work, he said.He listed the areas worst affected as Tudun Wada, Yelanguruza, Manawsahi and Bolari areas of Gombe metropolis.
