Biakpan calls for provision of infrastructure

People of Biakpan community in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State have appealed to the state government to provide them with good roads, water and electricity.They said that the provision of the facilities would enhance the economic potential of the community.A representative of the community, Mr Ima Bassey, noted with regret that the area had been neglected by successive governments in the past in the provision of basic infrastructure.He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Biakpan at the weekend that as a result of the neglect, the community had not been able to achieve any progress in the social, economic and agricultural sectors.``We have abundant tourist potential in the community. We are also great farmers, but we find it difficult to transport our farm produce to the markets outside the community.``Besides, the community lacks pipe borne water, electricity and other social amenities, he added.``The electric polls and cables that can be seen around have been in the community for several years now without any transformerBassey said the few social amenities that were available in the community were provided through community self development efforts.``The Post Office, hospital and even the technical college which was later taken over by the government were through the efforts of people of the community, he said.Bassey, a youth leader, said the progress of youths in the community had been hampered by the lack of government attention.
