Farmers commend Delta govt for subsidising fertiliser

Chief Jerry Ossai, Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Delta Chapter, has commended the state government for subsidising and facilitating early release of fertilisers to farmers for the current farming season.He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba at the weekend that the sale of fertilisers to farmers at N2,300 per bag  had brought some relief to them.``Farmers are not complaining about fertiliser this year. This is because government was able to release part of last years  stock for sale to them at affordable prices.``As a result of the subsidy, the price came down to N2,300 per bag, which is even cheaper than the N2,500 per bag it was offered last year, he said.Ossai, a former Commissioner for Agriculture, said the governments Youth Empowerment Through Agriculture (YETA) Programme had also been given a boost, through the provision of farm implements to assistthe beneficiaries during the current farming season.The gesture, he noted, would assist in increasing food production in the state.
