CHAIRMAN of Oyo State Cycling Association, Ndubuisi Okorie, says his team is in good shape to win the gold medal at the Port Harcourt 2011 National Sports Festival.Oyo State cyclists fell shot of the top spot at the last festival held in Kaduna with just a bronze medal, but Okorie said the coming festival would show the true worth of the team.Okorie, who doubles as vice chairman of Nigeria Cycling Federation (NCF), said he has put all machinery in motion to ensure that Oyo cyclists emerged tops in Port Harcourt, adding his association has held series of meetings with the leadership of Oyo State Sports Council to discuss the winning modalities for the sports festival. He noted that new and vibrant athletes have been recruited to take over from two-gold medallist at KADA Games, Victoria Gabriel, who has retired after completing her three appearances at the Games. He revealed: We have purchased new bicycles and spare parts to refurbish the damaged ones so that the athletes can have enough bicycles for effective training. And very soon, our athletes would be called to camp for perfect concentration ahead of the Games. He thanked Governor Christopher Alao-Akala over his attention to the athletes, and also the management of Oyo State Sports Council for the appointments of Victoria Gabriel and Olalere Alao as assistant coaches in cycling. The NCF chieftain further promised to work towards having state competitions for Nigerian cyclists, stating that the federation was looking at other ways of raising the standard of the sport in the country.
