Methodist Church Rekindles Love Among Couples

Published by Guardian on Tue, 03 May 2011

OPPORTUNITY came the way of Christian couples last weekend to rekindle waning fires of love at a retreat organised by the Methodist Church Nigeria, Lagos West Diocese. It was a moment filled with fun, laughter, arguments, criticism, honest confessions, soul-searching discussions, food and drinks.Addressing the couples on the theme: Cleaving Together, Rev. Solomon Shokoya said cleaving without stress is a critical issue that requires the grace of God. Majority today sees marriage as a very stressful affair. When Christians are seeking partners in marriage, it is essential to see the mind and will of God.Emphasising the role of Gods word in matrimonial success, he said: This (Gods word) is where right guidelines for direction can be found. When a believer is prepared to move in faith and obedience, Gods best will be found. Many who are cleaving today have found no rest because Gods will is lacking. His love is always expressed in what He says and does. The Lay President, Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Lagos West, Sir. Gabriel Adewumi, explained that the programme gives participants opportunity to ask vital questions. It is time to ask if we have been unfaithful to our marital vows, to amend our ways where we may have offended each other, and pledge commitment to a renewal. As a family, have we discharged our duties to our God, our spouses, our children and neighboursRev. Olumide Aluko lamented that many people spend fortunes building mansions but find it difficult to build homes. Remember the scripture says, you are the light of the world, and a city on a hill cannot be hidden. We must let this light shine so well that others around us will see us as models they can emulate. A research into Gods word reveals that there are basic home building principles couples need to cultivate.Speaking on the theme: Air Tight Connection in Christ, Pastor Olusegun Olatunde said marital challenges must not open the door for the devil to come in, and neither should financial or emotional challenges or character deficiencies. The Lord is expecting our marriages to be air tight, despite differences in marital background, social background, emotional background, spiritual background and financial background. As the retreat came to an end, the couples had fun as they cut the cake in unison.A couple, the Aiyelabolas, told The Guardian that their love has been reignited. Now our relationship is strengthened. We will get along better. Its teamwork. Weve learnt new things. We are ready to move on. We are ready to make time to be together. Its been a great blessing being at this retreat. God bless Methodist Church, Lagos West diocese!
