HIV/AIDS rate drops to 1.7% in Ondo, 2% in Bauchi

Published by Tribune on Mon, 09 Jul 2012

THE Ondo State government has said the prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in the state had dropped from the former figure of 3.2 to 1.7 per cent. The Project Manager of the Ondo State Action Committee on AIDS (ODSACA), Dr Dayo Adegbulu, said this on Saturday, at a workshop organised by the state Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, in collaboration with ODSACA.He said the state had been making efforts to ensure that new infections were prevented, while those already infected were given the needed attention.According to him, the rate of infection before the intervention of the current administration in the state, three years ago, was 3.2 per cent, adding that 'we have been able to reduce HIV/AIDS prevalence to 1.7 per cent, which shows that a lot of work is being done through the state government, the stakeholders and the civil society organisations.'He said by 2015, the state would have achieved zero per cent and stop new infections. Also in Bauchi, the HIV/AIDS prevalence has dropped from 3.1 per cent to 2.0 per cent. This development placed the state as having the least prevalence rate in the North-East geopolitical zone of the country. This was disclosed at the weekend by the Chairman of Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis/leprosy and Malaria (BACATMA), Dr Moham-med Liman, at the formal launch of the HIV/AIDS development project 11, held at the Zaranda Hotel, Bauchi.
