NDLEA arrests undergraduate for drug trafficking

Published by Guardian on Tue, 15 Feb 2011

THE National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested an undergraduate at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, for drug trafficking.According to the NDLEA, the arrest of the final-year undergraduate who claimed to be studying energy technology at the University of Brunel, London, was shocking. He was nabbed with 1.160kg of cocaine hidden in his stomach on his way to London on a Virgin Atlantic flight. NDLEA Commander at the airport, Alhaji Hamza Umar, promised to charge the 27-year-old suspect to court in connection with unlawful exportation and possession of 1.160 kg of substance that tested positive for cocaine. We have commenced investigation on the case and he will definitely be charged under the relevant section of the NDLEA Act, Hamza stated. Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, described the arrest of the student as unfortunate. He wondered how a final year student would ruin his career by indulging in drug trafficking. According to Giade: This is really unfortunate. His dream of becoming an energy technologist is now under threat simply because of one wrong step. The anti-narcotic helmsman, therefore, urged students to be focused on their dreams and resist temptations that could derail their destinies. The suspect, who hails from Abeokuta in Ogun State, South-West Nigeria, said that he wanted to use the 4,000 pounds promised him by his sponsors to pay part of his school fees. He left London to collect the drugs and deliver them for 4,000 pounds. In a confessional statement, the suspect said: I had wanted to use the money to settle part of my school fees. The desire to get the money did not allow me to weigh the consequences properly. I should have asked my parents who work in the UK for assistance. I really feel sad over the whole thing. It was not easy for me to swallow the drugs. The 90 wraps took me almost a whole day to ingest.
