Govt okays silos project for Abia

Published by Guardian on Tue, 15 Feb 2011

A MULTI-MILLION naira silos project has been approved for construction in Abam in Bende Local Council Area of Abia State provided the community quickly makes available the necessary land, according to Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Agwu U. Agwu. The Guardian learnt that up to 200 plots of land are required for the project. The Speaker, who said that the project was attracted by Senator Uche Chukwumerije representing Abia-North which Abam Bende is part of, added that the completion of the silos would enable the appropriate large agricultural produce of the area and its neighbours to be preserved after harvest until needed for use.    Agwu broke the news to Abam community leaders at the weekend at a meeting held in Ozu Abam Hall. The Speaker urged them to quickly allocate the needed land to demonstrate their acceptance of the project.Agwu explained that the project would attract businesses, employment, as well as other facilities, adding that their large produce after harvest would be saved from early rot as hitherto was the case and earn them good proceeds when sold at a later time.    Chukwumerije said in a telephone interview that the first phase of the project would cost not less than N100 million, stressing that what delayed its take-off was the land expected from the immediate benefiting community. The communitys spokesperson, Udo Dan, thanked the government for the project, pledging that land would soon be made available. Agwu had inspected the Ozu Abam Market where a block of stores valued at over N1 million was razed by fire last Thursday night and pledged to rebuild it soon.
