Published by Tribune on Fri, 13 Jul 2012

Residents and community leaders in Bariga area of Somolu Local Government of Lagos State have called on the State Police Command and the state government to beef up security in the area to curb the problem of incessant clashes among youth groups in the area.Community News findings revealed that cases of violent clashes among various groups in the area was on the increase, and this has been a source of worry to residents, especially parents."We are calling on the State Police Command to beef up security within Bariga and its environs as a means of curbing the problem in the area. On our part at the community level, we have created awareness among parents on the need to monitor their wards. We have also resolved among ourselves that we would always allow the law to take its course at all time, especially when a member of the community runs foul of the law. There is no scared cow. We are all equal before the law," Alhaji Yisau Adewale, a community leader in the area, told Community News.Community News learnt that youth in the area usually engage in free for all and in most cases, it usually created pandemonium among the residents. Area boys and street urchins often took advantage of the confusion to loot shops and houses."We are always living in fear of possible attack, as youths in this area often engage in violent clashes all the time. The police division here is trying but the boys usually overwhelme them in most cases. We need more plain clothe police men in this community to curb the excess of ravaging youths," Alhaji Adewale stated. However, Pa Taiwo Ayanwale who claimed to have been living in the since 1975, blamed the current problem on high rate of unemployment among the youths, 'we will continue to have this kind of social unrest until government is able to find solution to the problem of unemployment among our teeming youths.People have lost hope in the system, hence they take to crime. Government at the local level must stand up and come up with programme that will provide succour for the people. Local council must ensure that youths are well empowered."
