Post-election violence: Reps promise legislative intervention

Published by Tribune on Wed, 04 May 2011

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Dimeji Bankole, on Tuesday, at the plenary session decried the post-presidential election crisis in some parts of the country and promised that the House under his leadership was prepared to provide whatever legislative intervention necessary to prevent a recurrence of such political violence.Honourable Bankole, who stated this in his speech when the House reconvened after a brief adjournment, occasioned by the 2011 general election, also hinted that the leadership of the House would set up a transition committeeto herald incoming lawmakers for the seventh National Assembly. In his speech entitled, Our legacies would outlast us, he commended theIndependent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the electorate for the conduct of the elections saying the electorate exhibited an uncommon sense of commitment and enthusiasm, and must be commended for their faith in the democratic process. He added, although fraught with some irregularities as well as initial setback, the elections were adjudged by many observers, domestic and foreign, to be successful with room for improvement. Without trying to sound immodest, special commendation must go to the National Assembly. The successful conduct of the elections has vindicated our determination to ensure free, fair and credible elections as articulated in the 2010 Electoral Act (as amended). Indeed, our painstaking efforts were not in vain, as we have further underscored the critical role of the legislature in enthroning an enduring democratic culture.
