CCA backs Ehikhamenors Entrances and Exits

CENTRE for Contemporary Art (CCA), Lagos exhibits designer, Victor Ehikhamenors solo show, Entrances and Exits: In Search of Not Forgetting, which opens on SaturdayMay 7, ending on Saturday May 8, 2011.The body of work, which include paintings, photographs, drawing and installation will explore from an ethnographic perspective, the artists consummated experience between his ancestral heritage and home, and the subsequent valour with which the colours, patterns and designs engraved or drawn on these ancestral walls, doors and other surfaces fuelled his evolutionary style in figurative and abstract paintings and drawings.It also explores the aesthetic imagery that connects his visual repertoire with the beaming arts on the numerous shrine walls, including the mud walls of his many grandmothers, the rooms of his uncles, and other villagers walls.Ehikhamenor is a visual artist, photographer and writer born in Uwessan Irrua, Edo State, Nigeria. He has a BA degree in English and Literature, Msc in Technology Management and Masters of Fine Art (MFA) from University of Maryland, College Park, USA. Ehikhamenor has been prolific in producing abstract, symbolic and ethnographic works shown in Nigeria and United States.  He recants his personal experiences and childhood as it impacts on his art. He has published numerous fiction and essays in world journals and magazines. His works have been used as book/journal/magazine covers by major authors and publishers. He is currently the Creative Director of NEXT Newspaper in Lagos and also maintains a studio in Maryland, USA.  The artist stated: I thought I would stop at the drawings on walls and doorways, but I couldnt stop thinking about the history behind the walls and the doors I have drawn on in the village, hence I decided to extend the experience to my studio in Lagos.  The people that have come and gone over the time through the passageways kept playing in my memory. My grandmothers, my father and many of my uncles that have left became alive again. The doors I rejuvenated through art were what they traverse while alive. I began to look at the duality of the door notion, a passageway for entry and exit, life and death, night and day. Life itself is full of doors, whether real or imagine. I am yet to see any human that hasnt gone through a door. Whatever we do when we enter or exit from any door in life is what shapes our lives as human on earth.
