Geidam plans unity govt in Yobe

Published by Guardian on Wed, 04 May 2011

IN a move to pacify the opposition, Governor Ibrahim Geidam has promised to form a unity government that would ensure peace, unity, development and security of lives and property of the people of various ethnic and religious groups in Yobe State. The governor, who made the pledge in a broadcast yesterday in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, said it is through such a unity government that the other political parties that contested could participate in the efforts to move the state forward. His words: We are extending our hands of partnership to all the other political parties that contested. We urge them to put the election issues behind them and let us work together so that this state could be fully transformed, with better infrastructural facilities and increased living standards of all residents. All the candidates of other political parties who contested with me had put up a gallant fight and a healthy spirit of competition. I, therefore, urge them to put the contest behind them and accept our hand of partnership, which we are extending to them for the overall development and interests of the state. On the challenges of addressing poverty, unemployment and desertification, Geidam said: We assured the people that these socio-economic and environmental problems will be tackled decisively by fast-tracking the development strategies adopted by the 2009 Yobe Economic Summit. He said the way the strategy could be implemented is by harnessing both human and capital resources to fulfill all the campaign promises made on dividend of democracy and good governance.Geidam said: I see my mission and the six-point development agenda as that of ensuring the full realisation of our potential and deploying all the resources at our disposal to justify the confidence you have in us.The campaign promises are to be fully redeemed by working with our National and State Assembly members to bring in more meaningful development to the state. He expressed appreciation to members of his campaign organisation for mobilising supporters to ensure victory for the ANPP at the polls.
