NO fewer than 11,560 eligible candidates have applied for admission at the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) and have also participated in the institution's post-University and Tertiary institutions Matriculation Examination (UTME) screening in the institution. The post-UTME, which was concluded at the weekend, would pave the way for just about 400 of the candidates who would form the pioneer students of the newly-established university for the 2012/13 academic session.Speaking on the post-UTME screening on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Chinedu Nebo, the Registrar, Mr D. A. Adeyemo, said academic activities were expected to commence by July 25, 2012, thereby making FUOYE the first among the new federal universities to take off.According to Nebo, the students would be admitted in five faculties namely Humanities, Sciences, Agriculture, Social Sciences and Engineering, adding that they would be in Oye Ekiti where the institution's main campus is and its Ikole Ekiti campus. He gave the assurance that students of the university would not only be exposed to academics, but skill-acquisition initiatives that would guarantee them self-employment after the completion of their courses, pointing out that the dream of the institution was to train students that would rather be employers of labour. The institution's authorities said the number of students to be admitted was decided upon on the strength of the carrying capacity. The institution said there was no sense in admitting students beyond what it could handle, saying unmindful admission could cause population explosion that could derail the dream of the university's management.
