250 couples tie the knot in Kano mass wedding

Published by Daily Trust on Mon, 16 Jul 2012

About 250 couples on Sunday got married in Kano during the second phase of the government's planned mass marriage geared towards reducing the high number of unmarried women in the state.Daily Trust gathered that of the 250 women that were married off by the government through the Hisbah Board, 150 of them were young and previously unmarried ladies though the mass marriage scheme was introduced to address the problems of widows and divorcees.Also, unlike during the first batch of the program in which virtually all the couples were married at the within Kano metropolis, about 220 couples were this time around married within their respective local government councils under the supervision of their district heads. Only 30 couples had their marriages at the headquarters of the Hisbah Board within the city, it was gathered.http://www.youtube.com/watch'v=nDd_ZP28sCQThe Spokesman of the Hisbah Board, Musa Tanko Muhammad said that the decision to decentralize the process was based on complaints by the candidates and their relatives about distance the long distance they had to cover in order to attend the event in the city.'During the first batch of the program, some of the mass wedding candidates and their relatives found it difficult to attend the event at the central mosque in time because of the long distance from their localities to the city. That was why the process was devolved this time around', he said.Muhammed added that the board decided to include more women who had never married before in the process because they were higher in number than the widows and divorcees.Earlier on Saturday, Hajiya Amina Namadi Sambo, the wife of Vice President Muhammed Namadi Sambo donated 250 sewing machines, worth about N3.73 million to the 250 brides in a gift presentation ceremony organized for the couples at the government house.{jathumbnail off}
