Lagos approves BRT lanes for accredited vehicles

Secures accommodation for 12,800 athletesLAGOS State has approved the use of the dedicated BRT lanes for use by accredited vehicles during the 18th National Sports Festival, tagged Eko 2012, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Games has revealed.The LOC also says it has secured accommodation for 12,800 athletes coming for the event at three higher institutions located in the state.Chairman of the Media/Publicity and Communications Sub-Committee of Eko 2012, Wale Edun, told journalists over the weekend that Lagos was prepared to ensure that all participants, including athletes and their officials at the 25-sport festival, had the freedom to rise to the best of their abilities at the tourney.According to Edun, Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, 'wants to deliver a world class Games hence he has gone all out to provide international-standard facilities in all the venues.' The former Lagos Commissioner for Finance added: 'We have received approval for accredited vehicles to use the BRT lanes to make for quick movement of participants during the Games.'Aside that, the Federal Government has assured us that work at the Third Mainland Bridge would be completed before the Games, so we are assured of smooth traffic flow during the period.'Edun also revealed that the LOC has secured accommodation for 9,000 athletes at the University of Lagos, 2,600 athletes at YABATECH and 1,200 athletes at the College of Education (Technical), Akoka, adding: 'We have reached agreement with the schools to change their calendars so that the students would be on vacation during the Games.'We are happy to announce that when we visited the facilities at the schools, we discovered that they were all in good shape, and where there was work to be done, they were just minor repairs.
