Enyimba goes for double

Published by Tribune on Wed, 18 Jul 2012

FORMER African champion, Enyimba International Football Club of Aba has declared its readiness to go for a double this year by winning the ongoing Federation Cup and the Nigeria Premier League. The Aba-based premier league side is grouped alongside Warri Wolves of Warri, Makurdi side, Lobi Stars and Samba FC of Enugu in what has been described as "zone of death" in this year's Federation they are in Bauchi to slug it out for a quarter-final place in the country's oldest football championship.Speaking with sports journalists on Tuesday in Bauchi at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi, the General Manager of the club, Prince Okey Nwabeke, said the People's Elephants were determined to take on any team in the championship without underrating any team.Nwabeke noted that there was no longer any minnows in football these days, saying that this informed the decision of the club to face any team with all seriousness.According to him, the Federation Cup was one championship where some so-called underdogs had proved bookmakers wrong by sending big teams out of the championship, saying that considering its pedigree on the continent, it would be an insult for Enyimba to be dumped out of the Federation Cup by a minnow. He added that both the management and the players were not only determined but also committed to emerging tops in Bauchi centre.Speaking on the alleged insecurity in Bauchi, which forced Warri Wolves to pull out of the championship, Prince Nwabeke applauded the Bauchi State Football Association for putting all the necessary security measures in place with a view to ensuring a successful championship in the centre. He stated that since Enyimba arrived Bauchi it had not encounter any security challenge, declaring that both players and officials of the Aba-based side and the other teams in Bauchi centre had been going about their normal businesses without any fear.
