Plenty fun, frank talk at NASA outing in Rukuba

Published by Guardian on Wed, 02 Mar 2011

THE plethora of cultural performances that evening at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Rukuba, Plateau State did not overshadow the strong message the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Three Armoured Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Sunday Idoko had specifically prepared for the occasion.Even the audience appeared to have digested the message wholeheartedly without any ill-feeling more so when its delivery was tainted with comic atmosphere coloured with series of cultural menu dished out by many troupes that performed that evening. Entertainment apart, loyalty and discipline will always remain the watchwords of military establishment. While the audience were still savouring the rich cultural heritage as reflected in several performances, the GOC was loud and clear charging officers and men of the division to remain loyal and disciplined in the discharge of their responsibilities, especially during the forthcoming general elections. He gave the charge at the weekend during the end of the years Nigeria Army Social Activity (NASA), formerly, West African Social Activity (WASA) for 2010 held at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Rukuba, Plateau State. At this juncture, let me quickly urge you all to continue to be law abiding and to display utmost and absolute loyalty, discipline and dedication as this division must not be found wanting in the discharge of our responsibilities, he said.Major General Idoko also stressed the need for them to abide strictly by the guidelines for their participation in the forthcoming elections, which has already been issued to them.He described 2010 as an eventful year noting, in spite of obvious setbacks in the form of ethno religious crisis that engulfed our Area of Operational Responsibility (AOR) within 2009 and 2010, the division recorded remarkable achievements.According to him, the division executed all scheduled training activities which included the annual physical test, range classification exercises, battalion field training exercise and senior non-commissioned officers competition. He said the successes recorded last year made the occasion imperative as it provided an opportunity to commend officers and men for a good job.The GOC noted that the achievements recorded would have been impossible without moral and financial support from army headquarters and thanked the Chief of Army Staff and other principal officers at the headquarters for their support. He was equally grateful to state governments and heads of other security agencies within the divisions area of responsibility, the host communities and the families of officers and men for their support which, he said, was instrumental to the successes recorded in 2010.The occasion featured performances by different cultural troupes, donation of items to widows and orphans by the Nigeria Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) and the torching of a bonfire by dignitaries.Guests on the occasion included former ECOMOG Commander and GOC of the division, General Joshua Dogonyaro (Rted), Commander of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, Major General M.B. Obi and others.
