Ibadan Flood: Oyo Govt despatches SOS to FG

Published by Daily Trust on Thu, 19 Jul 2012

Men of Oyo state Fire Service and divers removing decomposing bodies of victims of last Sunday's flood at Dandaru River in Ibadan on TuesdayWorried by the perennial flooding of Ibadan and some other towns in Oyo State, the State Government has dispatched a Save-Our-Soul (S.O.S.) message to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to redeem his bailout pledge made last year to the effect that the Federal Government would do everything possible to cushion the effect of the disaster by proffering lasting solution against its recurrence.The state commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Bosun Oladele, in an exclusive interview with a team of Daily Trust reporters in his office, lamented that barely one year after the August 26, 2011 Ibadan flood disaster in which no fewer than 102 people were killed and a total of 2,105 buildings were washed away, the Federal Government was yet to make good its pledge to come to the rescue of the state.The commissioner also debunked the insinuations from certain quarters that the level of support from members of the public and corporate organizations to Oyo State Government and the 2011 flood victims ran into billions of naira saying it was erroneous.He said: 'The highest donation then came from Dangote himself in form of N50million that he pledged. It has since been redeemed.'{jathumbnail off}
