15-year old Michael upsets eighth seed

Published by Guardian on Thu, 05 May 2011

FANS at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, yesterday watched in awe as 15-year old Michael Michael from Co-Foundation Academy, Kaduna, mesmerised number eight seeded James Monday to win their hard fought boys 18 first round game.Michael, the number two seed in the boys 16 singles event, was allowed to play up one category and he showed admirable determination and composure on crucial points. Attempts by the older opponent to scare him with rushes to the net were countered with precise lobs that left Monday stranded. In another game featuring Sylvester Emmanuel, 15, the number one seed in the boys 16, who was also introduced into the boys 18 draw, lost a close first round match against Anthony Leo from the same Co-foundation. Leo, 17, saved two match points to beat his younger team-mate in a match that was finally decided by a tie-break.Other first round winners in the boys 18 included Christopher Edwards, 17, from the Federal Capital Territory, who beat Mojeed Shokunbi 9-0, and Biola Kuku of Lagos, who eliminated club mate Babajide Ipaye 9-3. The tournament, which features singles competitions in boys and girls 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 age groups, continues today with quarter-final matches.
