Nwofor targets WYC golden boot

Published by Guardian on Thu, 05 May 2011

AFRICAN Youth Championship (AYC) highest goal scorer, Uche Nwofor, wants to carry his goal-scoring form to the World Youth Championship (WYC) in Colombia to help the Flying Eagles do well at the championship. The Enugu Rangers star told The Guardian at the departure lounge of the Oliver Tambo International Airport on Monday that winning the award would boost his career, adding, however, that the feat would not have been possible without his team-mates support. The award is a big boost to my career and I believe that I can still score more goals at the WYC. All I need is to keep working hard and praying for the best, he said. But I must thank my team-mates for their support and assure those looking up to me that I will not disappoint them.According to Nwofor, toeing the footsteps of Ghana, which won the World Cup in Egypt in 2009, will be a tough assignment but Nigeria can achieve that. Adding that the family bond in the team, which took it to the top of African football, could still earn Nigeria the World Cup title, he assured: Emulating Ghana is a big task that we can surmount. All we have to do is prepare well and stay strong as a team.Nwofor, whose ambition is to join a top European club, admitted that the Flying Eagles missed Ahmed Musa, who left the competition after the opening game. He said: Well, I must admit that we felt the absence of Musa. He is an influential player but we did well as a team and did not allow his absence to affect us.
