Parishioners pick contractor for Lekki N1.5b church building

MEMBERS and friends of the All Souls Anglican Church gathered recently to jump-start its N1.5 billion new church building in Lagos, which will accommodate about 1, 225 worshippers.Coming on the heels of the appointment of the main contractor, Messrs 'Ponti and Company Italware Limited and Consultants, the new project is being piloted by the Building Committee, led by ' Chief Ayo Olagundoye and project architect - Delano Architects.Specifically, the foundation laying and fund ceremony was conducted at the church premises located close to off Admiralty Way, Lekki, Phase 1, by the Bishop of Lagos and Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos. The Most Rev Ephraim Ademowo. The Vicar Canon Olu Odjimi anchored the programme.The proposed building has a gross floor area of 1600sqm and is a three-floor building, which comprises a 50-car park on the lower ground level, the main church on the upper ground floor and a gallery level. A total of 187 car parks are provided externally making a total of 237 car parks. It also has ancillary support spaces such as vestries, choir robing rooms, conference room and administrative offices as well as accommodates 760 persons on the ground level and 465 persons in the gallery.The gallery on the upper level is raked such that all worshippers have an uninterrupted view of the chancel. A sound/multimedia room and two photographers gallery are all on this level.Essentially, the chancel comprises the choir stall with the altar in a semi-circular apse at the east end of the building with a barrel-vaulted ceiling. The East window comprises of three stained glass panels. The ancillary spaces, which include the vestries and administration offices, are all incorporated at the east end of the building.The church will have a 64-stops, four manual pipe organ with trumpet pipes over the 'west door'. It will also have up to date electronic and multimedia systems installed. The belfry is located on the left side of the building at about 18m above the ground.According to the Principal, Delano Architects, Mr. Roti Delano, the design philosophy for the New Church Building is to have a church that reflects a combination of contemporary and traditional church architecture reflecting the 'Ancient and Modern' concept of the Anglican Communion.'The church is approach through grand external stairs and ramps leading into the narthex or vestibule. From the vestibule are two grand stairs leading to the gallery. This enables Parishioners to get to the gallery without passing through the church. The main entrance -'The West' doors into the nave are also from this vestibule.'The nave, which is the main body of the church, is 23.0m wide, 16.5 m long and 16.0m high at the highest point, with the main entrance on the west side of the building. The North and South walls have long pointed arched casement windows for natural light. The ceiling will be finished with smooth paint with art work and floors will have white marble slab and tiles.'He said that the church would be air-conditioned using ducted units. All the ancillary spaces are all air-cooled with split units. 'Appropriate adequate lighting will be provided to enhance the ambience of the interior. The exterior finishes will be a combination of mosaic / ceramic tiles.'Other consultants include Morgan Omonitan and Abe Ultd (structural engineers'), CA Consultants Limited, CA Consultants Limited (electrical engineers) and Consol Associates (quantity surveyors).
