Bomb factories: FG deploys more troops in Kogi 'Gunmen kill airport tower operator in Maiduguri

Published by Tribune on Wed, 25 Jul 2012

FOLLOWING the springing up of illegal bomb factories in Kogi State, the Federal Government has deployed more troops in the state.Nigerian Tribune exclusively gathered on Tuesday that armed military troops had been deployed to flash areas in Kogi Central and Kogi West senatorial districts in the state.Sources close to one of the security agents in the state dislosed to the Nigerian Tribune that the recent happening in Kogi Central, where an attempt was made some weeks ago to bomb churches and the recent bomb attack on a bank and police station in Kogi West had given the Federal Government a challenge. It was further disclosed that all the security apparatus in the state had been put in place by the joint security task force made up of military, navy, police and State Security Service (SSS), to nip in the bud anything that could put the state in danger.Meanwhile, the state government has promised its commitment to safety of lives and properties in the state. The governor, Captain Idris Wada, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen, adding that the government would reinforce the security agents in the state so that they could face any security challenge.Meanwhile, DESPITE the pledge to cease fire during the Ramadan period by the Boko Haram Islamist sect, suspected gunmen, on Tuesday, trailed an airport tower operator, simply identified as Joe and shot him dead in the presence of his children, while conveying them to school in Gomari ward of Maiduguri, Borno State, by 7.30 a.m.A chemist was also shot dead by separate gunmen, barely an hour after Joe was killed at the same Gomari ward of the metropolis, at about 8.45 a.m.A resident and eyewitness, Umaru Audu, said gunmen came in unmarked vehicle, shooting into the air to scare the people, after they had killed the tower operator.'We had to run for our lives, as the gunmen fired sporadically to scare us from the scene. Some of us had to close our shops and houses, because of fear of being arrested by either the police or Joint Task Force (JTF),' he said.Confirming the two killings, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Gideon Jibrin, said the two incidents occurred at Gomari ward of Maiduguri, adding that no arrest had been made yet, but investigations, however, had commenced.
