Apapa NURTW appeals to Lagos govt for protection against illegal arrest

Published by Tribune on Wed, 25 Jul 2012

The Apapa branch 'A' of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has called on the Lagos State Government to help them address the issue of security threat and illegal arrest of drivers and conductors in their area, especially within Wharf, Liverpool and Waterside neighbourhood.According to the association headed by Alhaji Sarafa Akanbi, the incessant arrest of its members by agents of the Apapa Community Security Task Force, an agency of the Apapa GRA Residents Association (AGRA), has affected the welfare of the union and its members gravely. The association added that the insistence of the tasf force that they should repaint their operational vehicles in colours green and yellow was contrary to the instructions of the state government that all commercial vehicles be pained in yellow and black. The executives of the association added that they have not received any information on change of vehicle colour from the national body of union, the Lagos state government, the Ministry of Transportation or any of its agenices.'We are appealing to the government and the relevant state agencies to come to our aid to stop this barbaric development and call this unrecognised group disturbing the peace of Apapa GRA to order before it escalates into a big crisis.'According to the executives, they have decided to cry out till their voice is hard rather than breach the peace of community. The body stated that they had contacted all relevant agencies and authorities as those perpetrating the crime were not registered under any government parastatal. The executives urged the state government to look into the matter quickly with a promise to remain law abiding at all times.
