Raymond teenagers captivate fans at MTN Street Soccer

Published by Guardian on Wed, 25 Jul 2012

THEY were considered too young to compete against most of the teams, but Raymond Street's teenagers proved bookmakers wrong with their fantastic display in the first round of the season five of MTN Lagos Street Soccer Championship. The Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA)-based team was among the top teams that sealed easy passage to the second round of the championship. The youthful team brought glamour to Elegbata playing ground in Lagos Island with its mesmerizing skills, which most often confused its opponents during the first round encounter. With an average age of 15, the Raymond boys demonstrated that they had what was required to compete against the so-called 'big boys' for the ultimate prize in the competition. To affirm their place in the second stage of the tournament, the Raymond teenagers topped their group after recording three wins in four matches. With over 500 matches played across the state so far, some of the super centres are already hotly alive.Despite the heavy downpour, fans turned out en masse in various centres to watch the matches, which involved teams like CWIN Stars, Apapa's Faro, Emmanuel Street and 401 Road in Amuwo Odofin Local Council, among hundreds of teams that have qualified to play in the second round.Chairman of Iru LCDA, Abayomi Daramola, showed support to the championship with his visit to some of the centres in his council. Daramola charged the teams to eschew violence and play to the rules of the game. And to demonstrate his interest in the wellbeing of the teams, he ensured that medical facilities were in place in most of the venues he visited. Meanwhile, the defending champion, Lawal Akapo, reaffirmed its intention to hold on to the title with a giant stride in the second stanza of the competition.
