Omoruyi, others fault action of Reps, parties against Jonathan

Published by Guardian on Thu, 26 Jul 2012

FORMER Director-General of the Centre for Democratic Studies (CDS), Prof. Omo Omoruyi, yesterday condemned the impeachment plot against President Goodluck Jonathan by the House of Representatives. He urged members of both chambers of the National Assembly to deliberate on the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) instead of going on vacation when their services were urgently needed by the country.Omoruyi, who spoke on some national issues yesterday in Benin City, noted that the impeachment action was an indication that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was fighting itself and was at the verge of collapse. He also expressed surprise that the children and the incumbent and a former national chairman of the PDP were among those to be arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the fuel subsidy scam.'This impeachment thing we are hearing about is in a bad taste because it simply shows that the PDP is collapsing. Then you look at the companies they are taking to court over corruption, they are related to the current chairman of PDP and a former chairman of the party. That is not good enough.'Also, a socio-political group, the United Nigerian Professionals for Democracy and Justice (UNPDJ) has cautioned the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) against the use of inciting languages and other acts capable of undermining peace in the country. In a statement, the National President, Dr. Bayo Adeleke, said the ACN was always looking for ways to discredit the Jonathan Presidency and the Federal Government. He also expressed shock that CNPP could join in the call for impeachment of the President, saying it was not the solution to Nigeria's crisis.Meanwhile, a coalition of northern youth groups, Arewa League for Democracy and Development (ALDD), has described as irresponsible the call by some opposition parties for the impeachment of Jonathan at a time when the government was doing everything to deal with the security situation in the country. In a statement, the National Coordinator of the League, Malam Yinusa El-Habib, said the leadership of ACN and that of the Congress for Progressive Change had been carried away by their quest for power that they had become insensitive to the feelings of Nigerians and the mood of the nation.
