Fire guts Baale of Ofese residence

Published by Tribune on Fri, 06 May 2011

The Baale of Ofese inOdigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Chief Akindamade Ajihan and his household narrowly escaped being burnt by a strange midnight inferno that occurred in their compound during the week.At least four buildings and other valuables were razed down in the fire outbreak which was suspected to have been caused by vehicles of illegal crude oil merchants operating in the area.Among the vehicles burnt in the inferno were a Peugeot J5 bus and a Volvo station wagon that contained many containers believed to have been used to siphon crude oil from the pipeline.Narrating his ordeal during the night, Ajihan, who was rushed to Ore General Hospital, Ore, said he could not explain the source of the fire.According to him, the people in the area were already sleeping when he saw fire burning at a distance in his compound. He said, It all started like a dream because the people in the area were already sleeping when I discovered that there was a heavy smoke in the one-storey building and by that time, I could not see any fire.I gathered my wife, children and others in the building and we started shouting fire fire in order to get the attention of people. We searched the upstairs we could not see any fire. However, when I came to the ground floor, I saw that the whole building had been engulfed by fire.It was at this point that I tried to rescue my family members from the building and in the process we left two children upstairs and I have to behave like a man by rushing back into the building to rescue them and in the process myself and one of the children had burns on our body.
