Rotary Club donates N6million toilets in Abeokuta

Published by Tribune on Fri, 06 May 2011

As part of social responsibility toits immediate environment, the Rotary Club of Abeokuta, during the week, donated a set toilets worth N6 million to the palace of the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo. The toilets, which have separate sections for male and female, were handed over to the traditional ruler at a ceremony held within the palace premises. The president of the club, Dr Akinlade Akinola, said that the club decided to construct the project within the palace because it was a public place. He noted that the project, which started about four years ago, was aimed at ensuring comfort for the ever-increasing number of people visiting the palace on daily basis. We are aware that a lot of people come here everyday for social functions and most times, they urinate around or go outside the palace, since there were no functioning toilets. It was on the basis of this that we embarked on this project. In Rotary, we give what the people want and not what we have, Akinola said.Oba Adedotun Gbadebo commended the clubs president and its members for the gesture, saying that it was unprecedented. The monarch, who expressed satisfaction with the quality of job done, assured that it would be well-maintained.We are very grateful for this laudable project. I promise that we are going to employ a permanent cleaner to make sure that it is clean always.Let me also call on others out there to emulate the Rotary Club. It is always good to give back to the community and this should be emulated by others, he said.
