THE recent reaction of the re-elected governor of Bauchi State and former Aviation Minister, Alhaji Isa Yuguda has received all sorts of reactions in the media, not just from others, but also from the man himself. His excellency has since said he was misquoted, and it was then that it occurred to me that one could play at being his media aide , and attempt a public relations stunt to redeem his already- battered public image. The first thing to think of would be how to explain away the obvious goof , and one would have probably reacted the way it came back to the media: I was misquoted. But the fact remains that his exact words were quoted and that is yet to be refuted. That means, it was even more foolish to claim to have been misquoted than the original sin that was committed by the sentences uttered. They were destined to experience what they experienced(die the way they were butchered and set ablaze). Nobody can run away from destiny, when they were serving me, they were the happiest in Nigeria,he was quoted to have surmised. Yuguda then went on to lay the blame of the deaths of the young men at the doorsteps of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), saying that whilst the corps members worked with him(Yuguda), they were safe and that it was the responsibility of INEC to have ensure their safety whilst they worked with the Commission.Having controlled the air space indirectly as Aviation Minister, one can now begin to imagine the kind of logic that rule the air whilst he lasted in office. When a federal assignment is being performed in a state, does that mean that the governor of that state ceases to be the Chief Security Officer of that state What if it had been money that was to be shared Would the governor have left the federal parastatal to its own devisesThe other question that one would have loved to ask the Mallam is:if the security of the lives of the nine corps members who died were the responsibility of Professor Attahiru Jega as INEC chairman, what about those of the remaining 59 since about 60 lives were said to have been lost during the madness Were they also supposed to have been protected by Jega since Jega had become not just the governor of the 36 states and the FCT but also the President of the country and Commander -in-Chief of the Armed ForcesOne is still wondering what the governors experience was in Ibadan in the South Western part of the country where he claimed to have experienced what happened to the murdered corps members. Was he also pursued like a rat to a police station and the federal might was not brought to his rescue Was he selectively targetted because he was a northerner and had stopped working for the governorWhere really was our dear governor attacked in Ibadan One certainly hopes that he was not pursuing things other than what corps members are supposed to be doing; which is service to fatherlandWe all know Her Excellency is from Abeokuta, not Ibadan. It is a shame that there are still the likes of Yuguda on the corridors of power. Nigeria is making progress, and in due time, those who cannot think deeply will lose face. That things like the tragedy that befell those young men can still happen in any country in this century should make anyone responsible for security in that area or jurisdiction bury their heads in shame, not passing the buck.Did his excellency get back home to his family in a casket We have known of politicians who themselves wreak havoc on their own properties, especially during the terror reign of Abacha to draw government sympathy and earn underserved compensation. So, that his house was burnt is not a big deal compared with the futures that have been wasted. If he was killed in Ibadan, he would not have had the opportunity of being the sitting governor of a state in Nigerian, and the husband of three wives. The CPC candidate in that election has taken the shine off Yugudas victory by that advertorial which he put up commiserating with the bereaved families. Even if the Bauch State government puts up a dozen advertorials now, and also pays compensation, the spit is already dried on the coffins. And may the dead never forget.Lewis, 08055001746 or omotayolewis@yahoo.com
