Super Eagles beat Liberia 1-0, as WAFU Cup kicks off

Published by Guardian on Fri, 06 May 2011

WARRI Wolves Ekigho Ehiosun was the hero yesterday as Nigeria began its defence of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Lone Stars of Liberia. It was the only game of the day as the 2011 edition of the competition got underway in Abeokuta, Ogun State.Ehiosun, drafted from Nigerias Olympic team, scored the only goal with a poachers touch 24 minutes into the first half to snatch the three points in a tournament that has now been reduced to a six-nation affair.Mali and Senegal withdrew from the competition at the last hour for logistics reasons, while Gambia and Togo are still being expected today.Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, was forced to replace two Enyimba players, Valentine Nwabili and Bernard Okorowanta, originally billed to play for Nigeria in this championship, who withdrew from the tourney as their team is involved in a CAF Champions League game this weekend. They have been replaced by U-23 team left back, Usman Amoda, and Sunshine Stars forward Ifeanyi Okoye. But their absence did not affect the Nigerian team, which could have won by a wider margin but for the wastefulness of the strikers.Speaking after the game, Siasia said he was satisfied with the performance of the team considering the little time it had to prepare for the competition. But he promised a better Super Eagles team in the next game.
