Team Nigeria's Akinyemi on Glo/CNN African Voices

AS the London 2012 Games officially kicks of today in London, one athlete carrying the weight of expectations of millions of Nigerians for a first ever Olympic medal in Canoeing is Johny Akinyemi, the star guest on this weekend's edition of CNN's African Voices, sponsored by telecommunication giants, GlobacomAkinyemi is Nigeria's first Olympic canoeist as the country had never participated in the sport at the games before. Unlike some of the marquee summer Olympic events such as athletics and swimming, white-water canoeists navigate their course solo in a race against time.Akinyemi who has a British mother and a Nigerian father grew up in Warrington and started Canoeing at his local canoeing club when he was 12 years old.Glo/CNN African Voices runs on CNN on Friday at 8.30 p.m., Saturday at 3.30 p.m. and Sunday at 9.00 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. There are also repeat broadcasts on Monday from 10.30 to 11.00 a.m. and 5.30 to 6 .00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 5.30 to 6.00 p.m.The programme has featured several prominent Africans who have distinguished themselves in their different fields including Nigerian footballers Joseph Yobo and John Utaka.
